Zaire

Origin: Arabic, African

Meaning: Zaïre (or Zaire) is a name created by Voltaire for a play, perhaps basing it from Zahrah meaning either "blooming flower" or "bright, shining, radiant".

Zaire was also the name of what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The name came from a Portuguese adaption of the Congo river from Kongo word nzere or nzadi meaning "river that swallows all rivers".
