In Greek mythology, Selene was the goddess of the moon as well as being the lover of Endymion, a mortal whom she loved. Selene was also identified with another Greek goddess, Artemis.

In Greek, the correct pronunciation for Selene is se-LEE-nee, though it's often pronounced se-LEEN in English.
