Jesse
Origin: Hebrew
Meaning: a Hebrew masculine name possibly meaning "gifted" or "Yahweh exists" which can also be translated to as "Yahweh is" or "God is".
Jesse has also been used as feminine name, perhaps as a variant spelling of Jessie, itself a short form of Jessica meaning "to behold", "foresight" or "one who looks forth"; it was also originally used as a Scottish diminutive of Jean, the Scottish and English form of Jane, the feminine form of John meaning "Yahweh is gracious".
In the Old Testament, Jesse is the father of King David.
Variants:
- Yishay (Hebrew)
- Yishai (Hebrew)
