Meaning: the Norman French form of a Germanic name. The second element comes from Germanic element frid "peace" while the first element may be derived from Old Germanic gawia "territory". walha "foreign", or gisil "hostage, pledge".
It's also been conflated with Godfrey in the past meaning "peace of God".
