Origin: Greek

Meaning: created by William Shakespeare for his play The Merchant of Venice (1596), possibly based on Greek Nereis, which is a type of sea nymph (known as Nereid in English); the name is based on Nereus which means "water" from Greek neros. Nereus is the Greek god of the sea and father of the Nereids.
