Alvis

Origin: Old Norse

Meaning: a variant spelling of Alvíss, from Old Norse meaning "all wise".

In Norse mythology, Alvíss was a dwarf who was supposed to marry the daughter of Thor, Thrud. However, Thor wasn't too pleased with this arrangement so he came up with a trick requiring the dwarf to prove his wisdom by asking him questions until sunrise when the sun turned him into stone.
