Origin: Irish

Meaning: the feminine form of Fionn, an Irish masculine name meaning "fair" or "white" from Irish fionn or finn. It could also be a short form of Fionnuala, an Irish feminine name meaning "white shoulder".

Fiona could also be derived from Fíne, a Gaelic name that means "vine".

The name was first invented by Scottish poet James Macpherson, and later used as a pseudonym by author William Sharp.
